How to Choose the Perfect Hermès Mini Kelly

Let’s talk about the bag that’s small in size but massive in obsession: the Kelly 20, aka the Mini Kelly. Whether you’re deep in the Hermès universe or just flirting with the idea of your first orange box, this little stunner probably has a spot on your wishlist.

But before you take the plunge, there are a few things to consider—especially if, like me, you only plan to get one. Yep, just one. I don’t want to collect Mini Kellys. I want the one that fits seamlessly into my wardrobe, lifestyle, and travel plans. Basically: the perfect Mini that brings me everything I need from a small bag. Easy, right?

So let’s get into it—what makes the Mini Kelly so special, how to choose your dream version, and the three colors I’ve narrowed mine down to (with all the internal debate included).

A Little Backstory: What Is the Mini Kelly, Exactly?

Originally introduced in the 1980s, the Kelly 20 didn’t immediately become the star of the show. But then came the Mini Kelly II—with its delicate top handle, detachable shoulder strap, and structured elegance—and it became the It Bag for both Hermès loyalists and fashion lovers alike.

It’s small. It’s structured. And it fits just enough for your day out—cardholder, lipstick, keys, maybe the small phone if you Tetris it in right. Think of it more like a luxury accessory than a practical everyday bag.

And honestly? That’s what I love most about it. It’s not supposed to carry your life. It’s there to complete a look. It’s the handbag version of a bold lip or a perfect pair of earrings.

Why I Love the Sellier Style (And Why It Matters)

One of the best things about the Mini Kelly is that it only comes in Sellier style. That means the seams are stitched from the outside, creating a sharper, more defined shape. It gives the bag a structured, boxy look that feels super polished and very “I have my life together.”

To me, the Sellier construction makes the Mini Kelly even more elegant. It’s chic, it’s girly, it’s sophisticated—it just elevates everything. Even when I’m wearing sneakers and a sweater, throwing on a Mini Kelly instantly makes the outfit feel intentional and refined. If I ever needed proof that structure matters, this bag is it.

The Leather: Epsom, Chevre & Exotic Options

The Mini Kelly is offered in a variety of leathers, each creating a different look, feel, and overall vibe. Whether you’re after everyday elegance or something ultra-rare and collectible, here’s a breakdown of the main leather types to consider:

1. Epsom

• Pressed-grain, matte finish

• Holds its shape beautifully—perfect for the Sellier style

• Scratch-resistant and easy to clean

• Slightly rigid but lightweight

🖤 This is the one I’m currently leaning toward. All my Hermès bags are in Clemence and Togo, so I’m dying to experience Epsom’s structure and lightness. The Mini Kelly is the perfect little bag to try it out.

2. Chevre de Coromandel

• Natural grain with a soft, luxurious sheen

• Slightly more flexible than Epsom

• Extremely lightweight

• Makes colors appear deeper and more vibrant

• A little more delicate, but still durable

If you love a subtle shine and want your Mini Kelly to have a slightly more elevated glow, Chevre is a fantastic option.

3. Exotic Leathers: Alligator, Crocodile & Lizard

If you want your Mini Kelly to feel more like a collector’s item or statement jewel, exotic leathers are the ultimate flex. They’re rare, luxurious, and absolutely breathtaking.

• Ostrich:

• Soft, supple, and slightly glossy

• Recognizable by its dotted feather follicle pattern

• Incredibly durable and resistant to scratches

• Ages beautifully, developing a slight sheen over time

• Lightweight and easy to wear year-round

✨ I personally adore ostrich. It’s one of the most wearable exotics and adds just the right amount of texture and interest without being flashy. If you’re lucky enough to score a Mini Kelly in ostrich, it’s both chic and functional.

• Alligator or Crocodile:

• Available in shiny or matte finishes

• Bold, structured, and incredibly luxurious

• Often paired with shiny hardware or even diamond-encrusted pieces

• High-maintenance but iconic

• Lizard (Lissé or Ombré):

• Ultra-lightweight with a fine, glossy finish

• More delicate and often found in soft pastel tones

• Requires gentle handling but looks like wearable art

• Rare, refined, and perfect for collectors

💡 Note: Exotic Mini Kellys are often reserved for Hermès VICs and come with higher price tags—but if you’re dreaming of a statement piece or future heirloom, these are true showstoppers.

Hardware: The Tiny Detail That Changes Everything

Next, we have hardware—and yes, it’s just as important as color. The Mini Kelly looks completely different depending on whether it’s dressed in GoldPalladium, or Permabrass.

• Gold Hardware (GHW)

• Warm, classic, slightly dressier

• Looks luxe with Gold, Noir, Chai, Etoupe, and Rouge H

• My personal go-to when I want that old-money glam

• Palladium Hardware (PHW)

• Cool-toned silver

• Modern, clean, and more casual

• A perfect match for understated luxury lovers

• Permabrass (harder to find)

• Soft champagne gold

• Subtle, vintage-inspired, quietly elegant

• A great middle ground if you’re indecisive

Now for My Dilemma: What Color Should I Get?

If I could only have one Mini Kelly—and realistically, that’s the plan—I want it to be the one. Something that goes from day to night, works with my travel outfits, fits under coats in winter, shines at dinners, and strolls effortlessly through the streets of Paris.

At first, I flirted with the idea of going bold. Orange HVert VertigoRose MexicoBlue Jean—they’re fun, they’re fabulous, and they’re definitely eye-catching. But the truth is… I know myself. I love these colors on other people, but when it comes to my own wardrobe? I live for neutrals.

So after deep thought (and way too many imaginary outfit pairings), I’ve narrowed it down to:

• Noir – The ultimate classic. Chic, polished, never wrong. Perfect for formal events, casual looks, and everything in between. You don’t think twice with a black bag.

• Gold – My signature shade. I already have it in my Birkin and Lindy (and a few other brands…), but it’s so easy to style that I know I’d wear it a lot.

• Etoupe – The underdog with a quiet charm. Cool-toned, seasonless, and wildly versatile. My Picotin 18 in etoupe is one of my most used bags.

I know these choices might sound “safe” to some, but at the end of the day, I want something that works with my wardrobe, not against it. I’m not here to collect for the sake of collecting—I’m here to find a forever piece that fits my life.

Final Thoughts: Let the Bag Find You

If you’re shopping for a Mini Kelly, my biggest advice? Think about your lifestyle, your wardrobe, and how often you’ll actually reach for the bag. It’s tempting to chase rare colors or trendy combos, but the bag you use will always be the one that brings you the most joy.

And as for me? I’ve put my wish out into the universe. Whether the Hermès gods send me Noir with GHW, Etoupe in Epsom with PHW, or something I never expected—I’m ready to fall in love.

Because in the world of Hermès, you don’t always pick the bag. Sometimes, the bag picks you.

Would you go bold or stick to a classic? Drop your dream Mini Kelly combo in the comments—I love seeing what everyone would choose! 💭✨
